No Happily Ever After

In my project, I am depicting common contemporary social issues with the characters from the ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales as the subjects. I am interested in juxtaposing the idealised life portrayed in classic fairy tales with the modern challenges of contemporary society.

Social media become a platform for anyone to anonymously and/or purposefully bully another person online. I chose Rumpelstiltskin to present the comments he might have recieved on a daily basis, due to his evil and selfish personality.

Briar Rose, also known as Sleeping Beauty, was chosen to represents beauty standards that have been perpetuated that cause people to feel like they need plastic surgery to be able to ‘fit in’. In the fairytale, the fairies make beauty wishes on Briar Rose when she is born which results in her marrying a prince.

Hansel and Gretel were chosen to represent the greed and financial issues that are being faced all over the world. In the fairytale, Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in the woods so that their parents would have more money for themselves.

This project means a lot to me as it was my first ever exhibition!
